Licensing your work under CC

Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) is a nonprofit organization that provides free, easy-to-use copyright licenses for creators to share their work with the public.

Step by Step Searching for CC

Step 1: Choose the Right Search Platform

Different platforms offer search tools specifically designed to find CC-licensed content. Here are some popular options:

  • Flickr: A photo-sharing site with a large collection of CC-licensed images.
  • Picryl: A public domain media source you can use to find images, documents, and references.
  • Pixabay: Over 4.9 million+ high quality stock images, videos and music
  • Creative Commons Search: Directs you to various platforms that host CC-licensed content.
  • Wikimedia Commons: A vast repository of free-to-use media files.
  • Jamendo: For CC-licensed music.
  • Content Discovery, Core.ac.uk: For general research academic content. Database pulls from other repositories.

Step 2: Perform your search

Step 3: Verify the License

Once you find content you like, always verify the specific CC license:

  • Look for a license icon or link near the content.
  • Click on the link to read the full terms of the license on the Creative Commons website.
  • Confirm whether the license allows for the intended use (e.g., commercial use, modification).

Step 4: Attribute the Creator Properly

If you use CC-licensed content, you must provide proper attribution. Follow the TASL format:

  • Title: Name of the work (if available).
  • Author: Name of the creator with a link to their profile or original work.
  • Source: Provide a link to where the work is hosted.
  • License: Mention the specific CC license and link to its description.

Example: “Image Title” by Creator Name is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
